They were Lazarus and his two sisters, Mary and Martha. Jesus had three very close friends who lived in Bethany. Anyone who walks in the daytime will not stumble, for they see by this world’s light. But did Jesus go to them right away? (No. So when He heard that Lazarus was sick, He stayed where He was two more days, and then He said to His disciples, ‘Let us go back to Judea.’”Mary and Martha sent a message for Jesus to come to heal Lazarus.
When the Jews who had been with Mary in the house, comforting her, noticed how quickly she got up and went out, they followed her, supposing she was going to the tomb to mourn there.“When Mary reached the place where Jesus was and saw Him, she fell at His feet and said, ‘Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died.’‘When Jesus saw her weeping, and the Jews who had come along with her also weeping, He was deeply moved in spirit and troubled. Now Jesus had not yet entered the village, but was still at the place where Martha had met Him. ‘The Teacher is here,’ she said, ‘and is asking for you.’ When Mary heard this, she got up quickly and went to Him. Do you believe this?’“‘Yes, Lord,’ she replied, ‘I believe that you are the Messiah, the Son of God, who is to come into the world.’“After she had said this, she went back and called her sister Mary aside.
Now, Jesus is telling people to roll the rock out of the way of the cave. He died, so they put him in the cave and rolled the rock in front of it. That’s what they did to Lazarus. ‘Take away the stone,’ He said.“’But, Lord,’ said Martha, the sister of the dead man, ‘by this time there is a bad odor, for he has been there four days.’”Back then, they buried people by putting them in a cave and rolling a big rock in front of the cave. It was a cave with a stone laid across the entrance.
When we have a problem, we have to remember to pray and trust that Jesus is powerful enough to help us with it. When Jesus comes back, He will bring everyone who has died back to life, and we will live with Him forever.How did Jesus raise Lazarus from the dead? (God gave Him the power.)Jesus prayed and then, He just told Lazarus to come out. I knew that You always hear Me, but I said this for the benefit of the people standing here, that they may believe that You sent Me.’“When He had said this, Jesus called in a loud voice, ‘Lazarus, come out!’ The dead man came out, his hands and feet wrapped with strips of linen, and a cloth around his face.“Jesus said to them, ‘Take off the grave clothes and let him go.’What did Jesus do for Lazarus? (He brought him back to life.)And Jesus will bring all of us back to life one day too. Then Jesus looked up and said, ‘Father, I thank You that you have heard Me.
You only have to wait.“Therefore many of the Jews who had come to visit Mary, and had seen what Jesus did, believed in Him. He will help you the best way possible. When you have problems, you can trust that even if Jesus doesn’t help you right away. You have to believe that Jesus knows the best thing for you too. He can do anything.But do you remember how Mary and Martha sent Jesus the message about Lazarus being sick? Why didn’t Jesus go help Lazarus right away and heal him? Why did Jesus wait until Lazarus died to help him?Jesus knew that the best thing was to wait and raise Lazarus from the dead so that people would believe in Him even more.
When they tag someone, that person must freeze in place, like they’re dead. Game: Lazarus TagPick one student to be Death and another student to be Jesus. Everyone was getting jealous of Jesus and how much people liked Him instead of them. The Romans wanted people to serve the Roman Emperor, not Jesus. The priests wanted people to only listen to them.They were also afraid that the Romans might come and make war on them for letting Jesus get too powerful.
Help us to keep believing in You and looking forward to that day. Closing PrayerJesus, we thank You that You will raise all of Your believers back to life one day, just like You raised Lazarus from the dead. It could be a relative or someone famous they’d like to meet. Then, give them drawing supplies and have them draw them a picture with someone who has died but whom Jesus will bring back to life. Craft: Looking ForwardRemind students that when Jesus comes back, He will bring everyone who believed in Him to back to life to live with Him forever. Play as long as time allows, switching roles every so often so that everyone gets to be Death and Jesus.
